I've always been a sucker for blow-the-back-off blues harmonica ever since I heard Little Walter do his stuff way back when. In recent years I've admired the sanctified blues stylings of Darrell Mansfield and would suggest that this Nashville-based musicianary is every bit as good. Whether he's handling a slinky shuffle or a slow, high and lonesome cry from the heart his playing is exemplary whike Zack's gravelly voice, though nothing special, does sound suitably authentic and punches home the lyrics about prayer, the Father's Son and being washed in the blood. Some gospel blues performed by white guys can sound pale and derivative but this is the real deal. Here's hoping that one day Zack gets to the UK.
