Two years on from the release of his critically acclaimed debut solo album 'Circles', Northamptonshire-based Spenceley returns with his new album 'Heart Strings'. Haydon's change of stylistic direction from the gutsy rock music of old to a thoughtful electropop muse is here executed to fine effect. The album begins brightly with the title track, which highlights one of the songwriter's main strengths; his ability to reel the listener in. Likewise, the beginning of each individual track on the album is elaborate and attractive, which contrasts smoothly with their relaxing and minimal nature. On the album, we are offered a diverse collection, where there is occasionally an orchestral feel, on album highlight "Masterplan"; "Lay It Down" brings nostalgia of old school computer game soundtracks, and "Crying" is written from the perspective of God about how the men and women he made in his image are nearly bringing him to tears. Showing the same insightful approach to lyric writing and skilful ability to overcome the limitations of budget-line recording, this is further indication that his 'Circles' debut was no flash in the pan and that we are seeing a songsmith clearly developing his creative gift.
