Disciple 888 is a definite throwback to '70s and '80s rock. Chris Pusey, John Whitbread and Geoff Whitbread gather together to deliver up a bunch of cover versions of classic rock. Not quite sure whether there is much point to new versions of Hendrix, Led Zep and three Pink Floyd covers. You can have too much Floyd on a seven-track CD. Basically the album takes these crusty old rock songs and delivers them with new godly lyrics in a fashion bettered by the American band ApologetiX. So not a new idea and nor particularly well executed, where ApologetiX manage some wit, this is as stodgy as the music. Pusey has some definite musical chops and the album certainly highlights his great guitar playing but after seven songs all that soloing gets a bit wearing. The production is decidedly muddy and the whole thing just ends up sounding terribly old fashioned. If you are going to reach out to people why not write an album of amazing, insightful, well produced, moving material rather than ripping off '70s rockers and writing cheesy lyrics to their songs? Not much here to get excited about!
